Né en 1949 à Palma de Mallorca, Carlos Mata a étudié aux Beaux-arts de Barcelone et de Paris.

Carlos Mata est un insulaire qui s’est laissé absorber par la terre et le paysage. Ses sculptures en sont le prolongement et ont l’aspect de l’argile, de la terre cuite.

Carlos Mata développe un bestiaire intemporel composé de taureaux, vaches, coqs, et surtout de chevaux, hiératiques et fiers. L’idée archéologique, sinon rupestre est essentielle pour absorber le travail de cet artiste qui a su inventer une écriture personnelle. Le dessin des ses œuvres est marqué par un style minimal aux lignes épurées. Son bronze en revanche est tout en irrégularité et aspérités, tandis que les patines, par leur aspect vieilli , usé, authentiquement oxydé, renforcent leur caractère primitif.

Carlos Mata a cette griffe particulière qui fait de lui un sculpteur reconnaissable au premier coup d'oeil. Il utilise un langage expressif très personnel, c'est un créateur qui se délecte et qui joue avec les formes plus ou moins élémentaires.

Carlos Mata is an islander absorbed by the earth and landscape. His sculptures are in fact born from the earth and represent a continuation of it, bearing their marks of inspiration in clay and terracotta.

Carlos Mata creates an eternal bestiary full of bulls, cows, roosters and most of all, horses, appearing hieratic and proud. The idea of archeologic and rupestral art is an essential point of reference for the artist, representing a point of departure for the development of his unique style. The drawing of his sculptures strikes with its minimal style and pure lines. The bronze, however, presents asperities and irregular textures, and the ancient-looking patinas, authentically oxidized, strengthen such a primitive character.

Carlos Mata uses a very personal and expressive language, which makes his style immediately recognisable. He masters the creative process by playing with both basic and more complex shapes.
